Travel in style across China on the Shangri-La Express train, exploring the rich history of the northern provinces of China and the Gobi Desert.

From Golmund experience the newly built ‘Roof of the World’ railway into Lhasa, a sensational way of arriving into this mystical land.

Carriages aboard the Shangri-La Express are fitted with two bunk style beds, the lower converting to daytime sofa seating. Cabins are designed to provide optimal amenities and ample storage space. Showers and changing rooms are in the central washroom car. The restaurant and bar cars are spaciously proportioned with musical entertainment each evening.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 – TO BEIJING

Fly from London to Beijing with British Airways. (N)

DAY 2 – BEIJING

Arrive and transfer to the Peninsula Palace Hotel for 2 nights. Afternoon tour of the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square. Evening welcome dinner. (D)

DAY 3 – BEIJING

Morning tour of the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Afternoon at leisure. (B, L)

DAY 4 TO LUOYANG

Today board the Shangri-La Express. Settle into your cabin or have a drink in the bar car before dinner on board as the train travels towards Luoyang. (B, D)

DAY 5 LUOYANG

Morning visit to Luoyang museum containing relics from the city’s glory days. Afternoon visit to Dragon Gate and Longmen Caves. (B, L, D)

DAY 6 – XIAN

Morning arrival in the ancient city of Xian. Full day tour of the Terracotta Warriors and old city of Xian. Evening Tang Dynasty show and dinner before a late evening departure. (B, L, D)

DAY 7 – SHANGRI-LA EXPRESS

Travel through the Gobi to Golmund. (B, L, D)

DAY 8 – GOLMUND

Morning arrival into Golmud, which is the starting point for the new 1,149 km ‘Roof of the World’ railway line to Lhasa. Travel through the Tangula Pass and over the Tibetan Plateau to Lhasa, the Tibetan capital and worlds’ highest city. On arrival in Lhasa, transfer to the Lhasa Holiday Inn for 4 nights. (B,L, D)

DAY 9 - LHASA

Day at leisure to acclimatise. (B)

DAY 10 - LHASA

Full day tour of Lhasa including Jokhang Temple, Barkor market, Potala Palace and the Dalai Lama’s winter residence. (B, L)

DAY 11 – LHASA

Morning visit to Norbu Lingka, the Dalai Lama’s summer palace. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

DAY 12 – BEIJING

Fly from Lhasa to Beijing. Transfer to the Peninsula Palace for 1 night.

DAY 13 – TO LONDON

Fly from Beiing to London with British Airways. Afternoon arrival. (B)
