A TRIO OF TRAIN TRIPS – 14 DAYS FROM £1,495
Visit places associated with the wild west – such as Scottsdale,
Montezuma Castle, Sedona, Williams, The Grand Canyon, Flagstaff,
Albuquerque, Taos, Durango, Grand Junction, Denver and the Rocky
Mountains on this Western American Railtour. Even the names sound like
they are straight from a cowboy movie!
The railroad opened the west during the 19th century and even today it
is perhaps considered the most exciting way in which to explore this
region of the United States. Your tour could begin in Scottsdale in
Arizona, at a relaxing resort hotel, and could take you to such
highlights as the breathtaking Grand Canyon. You could then travel to
historic Albuquerque and the delightful town of Durango, in New Mexico.
Experience the exhilarating train journeys across Arizona, New Mexico
and Colorado to Denver and have time to explore the fabulous Rocky
Mountains - sights and scenes forever associated with the Wild West.
Steam train journeys so real in fact, that you will expect to see the
Indians attack at any minute!
Ride on The Grand Canyon Railway, for the thrilling journey to the Grand
Canyon. The Railway has a mixed fleet of steam and diesel locomotives
and you will travel in beautifully restored coaches originally built in
the 1900‘s. On arrival you must make free time to familiarise yourself
with what must surely be one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the
world, The Grand Canyon. Level upon level of rocks form intricate shapes
and beautiful sculptures and almost a mile far below, you may just be
able to catch a glimpse of a silvery streak which is the mighty Colorado
River. Try and make time to take a helicopter flight over the Grand
Canyon – you have to do it to believe it!
Take a step back in time. At Chama, you can board the Cumbres & Toltec
Railway for a stunning journey through the Rocky Mountains.
This coal burning locomotive wends its way through spectacular scenery,
past craggy mountain peaks, through tunnels and along beautiful valleys.
Next, take a trip on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Following the route of the original Denver & Rio Grande Railroad through
the wilderness of the Juan National Forest, you cannot help but be
impressed by the ingenuity of the engineers, who created the track back
in 1881, and which passes through terrain which even today is only
accessible on either train or by horseback.
Journey east to Georgetown and take the historic Georgetown Loop
Railroad into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. This journey takes you
by steam locomotive over the reconstructed Devil’s Gate High Bridge.
This almost 100 feet high and 300 feet long viaduct forms a spiral where
the track actually crosses over itself and was hailed as a marvel of
engineering skill when it was built back in 1884.
Of course, this is only a suggestion, you can decide where to visit and
how long to stay in this ‘wild west’ part of America. Please ask for
more details.
