tour designed to enable you to experience the very best of these
wonderful locations, combined with the comfort and style of travelling
by train. With time to explore the fabulous cities of Boston, New York,
Philadelphia and Washington, surely amongst the most iconic and historic
in America, you can also allow time to experience the old southern charm
of Charleston and Savannah, finishing with the stunning coastline of
Miami Beach, with its glamorous Ocean Drive and Art Deco district. This
trip will encapsulate a fabulous mix of history, architecture, and
sights that you cannot fail but enjoy. Travel in comfort along some of
Amtrak's extensive train networks, with excellent onboard facilities,
and you are sure to relax and take in some wonderful scenery en-route.
Become acquainted with Boston, possibly the most English of all American
cities. Boston is a very easily walkable city, with most of the tourist
attractions very close together. Walk along the guided ‘footsteps’ of
history on the Pioneer Trail. Visit the site of the famous Boston Tea
Party or visit Charlestown where the USS Constitution, more commonly
known as the Old Ironsides, is moored. There are also plenty of
historical sites within easy reach outside of Boston, in the villages of
Lexington and Concord, where in 1775 the men of the patriotic militia
and the British forces clashed, which triggered, and then exploded into
the American War of Independence, dramatically changing the course of
history forever. You could make time to explore the Harvard Campus,
which contains over 400 buildings in various architectural styles. Used
to watch ‘Cheers’ on TV – then pop along to the Cheers Bar just beside
the park. Or ride on one of the Gondolas on the lake in the park.
Amtrak's Acela Express train will take you to New York, passing through
the changing landscapes of Rhode Island and Connecticut before entering
New York State. The New York skyline comes into view and we proceed
dramatically into the heart of the city to famous Pennsylvania station.
There is plenty to see and do in New York. Be sure to take one of the
open topped bus tours to introduce you to the main areas of the city
including Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Wall Street and Central Park. You
are spoilt for choice as far as the restaurants are concerned, every
country in the world is represented to choose from as far as cuisine is
concerned. Why not visit the theatres of Times Square and Broadway as
you make your first explorations of this wonderful, vibrant city.
Manhattan, quite possibly the most famous skyline in the world. Visit
the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island for an insight into the city's
history and how its cosmopolitan culture evolved. Alternatively why not
visit the splendid Empire State Building where you can ride to the 86th
floor observatory for a spectacular view of the city. New York has a
vast myriad of things to see, however the city is surprisingly easy to
navigate and can be easily experienced on foot where there are fresh
discoveries and surprises around every corner. Don’t forget to take a
walk in Central Park!
Take the Acela Express to Philadelphia. Before visiting the current
State Capital, visit the old one. Philadelphia, the city of the founding
fathers. Take a walk around the original ‘Capitol’ building, where the
July 4th Declaration of Independence papers were drawn up, and signed.
Walk up close around the Liberty Bell. Again, this is a very easily
walkable city but there are also open topped bus trips, which will take
you around on a ‘drop off- drop on’ basis all around the city.
Take the Acela Express to Washington. On arrival why not take a city
tour which passes by the gardens of the White House, home to every
American President since George Washington, and make a visit to the
Capitol building, the seat of congress. See The National Mall, which
includes the famous Lincoln and Washington memorials, and is
immortalised by so many films and historical events throughout history
can be seen from here. The fantastic Union Street Station, a turn-of-the
century Art Nouveau building of imposing grandeur, that is now an
exclusive shopping and restaurant arcade and is well worth a visit. Old
style carriage buses are available as tour buses on ‘drop off- drop
on’ basis in Washington. These are well worth a ride, as they can take
you as far out as the Arlington Memorial, where you can visit Kennedy’s
grave, with its flame which is always lit.
Washington is home to a fantastic collection of grand museums, many of
which have free admission, and you may wish to spend some time exploring
some of them. The most notable is the excellent Air and Space Museum
where original flying machines are exhibited in a fabulous display of
the history of flight from the Wright brothers to space travel. You may
also wish to pay a visit to the National Archives building located near
the Capitol building which houses the Constitution, the Declaration of
Independence and the Bill of Rights. You could take a short trip into
Georgetown, residential district of the elite with its famous university
campus and wide choice of eating places.
You leave Washington, catching Amtrak's Palmetto service for Charleston.
This relaxing ride takes you through historic Virginia and the pine
forests of the Carolinas before its evening arrival. Facilities aboard
the Palmetto include a lounge car serving drinks and light snacks.
Charleston was built by the privileged upper society at the time of
profitable plantations, and today is a beautifully preserved
architectural and historical treasure with its fantastic Antebellum
mansions, elegant streets and passageways leading to lovely gardens. The
best way to see Charleston's hidden charm is to explore and we can
arrange a guided tour to better acquaint you with this lovely city. Here
there is one of the oldest public gardens in America. Set on the banks
of the Ashley River, Magnolia Plantation's gardens have been continually
planted since the 1680's and boast a year round spectacle of colour with
its varied plants and shrubs.
Savannah was taken by General Sherman's troops in December 1864 due to
its strategic importance in the Civil War. However, by good fortune it
was not torched, but was preserved intact as a present to President
Lincoln. Today, therefore, it retains its "Old World" feel with its
leafy green squares, beautiful southern homes and great moss draped
oaks. You need to allow time to explore to enjoy it. The historic area
and River Street feature a medley of antique shops, galleries and gift
shops featuring handicraft goods whilst the revitalised riverfront now
boasts bars and restaurants, which can be particularly pleasant on the
balmy evenings.
Board Amtrak's Silver Meteor train with an early start for your train
journey to Miami. This journey will take you the entire length of
Florida to arrive at your destination later this evening. Facilities
onboard the Silver Meteor include dining car serving full meals.
Spend time in Miami to perhaps relax and enjoy the white sands of
Miami's famous "South Beach" or alternatively walk along the pedestrian
promenades to explore the gorgeous Art Deco district and glamorous Ocean
Drive where a plethora of cafés, restaurants, and boutiques can be
found. This narrow strip of land was developed in the 1920's, 30's and
40's, into a fashionable resort that today still remains extremely
popular with a laid back lifestyle and its year-round sunshine.
